I am sorry that I have been away, but a thunderstorm stole my power for a bit....It is touching, ain't it...The specific controversy, about a symposium in First Things, that occasioned the piece was a bit of a tempest in a teapot. I myself weighed in, in a letter in Commentary, suggesting that we had better things to do than denounce allies, and that the insensitivity of language, although not trivial, was understandable given the mode of analysis in the Natural Law tradition. The funny thing is that Richard John Neuhaus is generally considered to be a neocon, he runs in those circles (as does Michael Novak), and many neocons were on the editorial board of First Things, so it was not the general "Neo- Thomist" orientation of the journal that was the problem, but the raising of questions about the legitimacy of our institutions in the wake of various offenses that some contributors engaged in.....
