I agree, as compelling as the cost/benefit argument for DDR is, if Intel is in a position to dictate chipset design, DDR will have a tough time.

If AMD cannot produce large quantities of Athlons by the end of Q1, Intel will be in a postition to do pretty much whatever it wants.

If AMD can produce reasonable volumes of Athlons at competitive speeds, then Intel won't be in a position to dictate memory types and the memory fabs and motherboard manufacturers - according to various published reports - have been resisting Rambus because its larger die size results in smaller yields per wafer and, of course, they hate paying royalties. In this case Rambus is a lot less likely to do very well.
