An interesting thing happened this week at a local popular mexican (non-francise) fast-food establishment. The price of every menu item was raised between 15 and 20 percent. The cashiers are instructed to announce to every customer cheerfully "we've had a price increase" and hand them a paper copy of the menu with the revised prices, to take with them. Many customers probably would not have noticed the increase had it not been mentioned.

While this is an isolated incident, it's interesting that this restaurant owner is confident that her customers don't care so much what they pay. I wonder how many other restaurant owners and service providers possess pricing power that they are unaware of, but could be exploited, in today's booming economy. A thought that could make the Greenman shudder.
