My mother worked, stopped when she had children, went back to work until my sister had a child at sixteen and left the workforce so my sister could finish school. She has only recently returned to the workforce. My sisters, through their formative years, only knew her as an at-home mother, and neither suffered any terrible insecurities. My nephew, on the other hand, has many insecurities, never having known his father and rarely seeing his working mother (yes, he wanted more time with her, not my mother).
Whether it's a difference between individuals or how you've been raised, I don't know. This is just what I've witnessed first hand.
