SATURDAY PREVIEW: The Cavaliers, who are the first ACC team in 30 years to begin the season with back-to-back conference road games, entertain Wake Forest at 7 p.m. in the first game at remodeled Scott Stadium. Virginia (1-1 overall, 1-ACC) is coming off a 33-14 upset loss at Clemson that has planted the seeds of doubt, but the Cavaliers are 16-1 against Wake under George Welsh, including 15-0 since 1983. WHAT THE CAVALIERS HAVE TO DO TO WIN: Virginia's success in this series has come from its ability to dominate both lines of scrimmage. The Cavaliers have had running backs rush for 100 yards 17 times in the last 19 games against Wake Forest, and have held the Deacs under 100 rushing yards as a team on most occasions. KEY MATCHUP: Both of Virginia's opponents so far have played man-to-man coverage against the Cavaliers receivers. For the Cavaliers to create some running room for All-ACC tailback Thomas Jones, their receivers have to win some of the battles with opposing cornerbacks. INJURY REPORT At Clemson, the Cavaliers were without their two best defensive cover men, safety Antwan Harris (hamstring) and cornerback Dwayne Stukes (pulled quadricep). Welsh hopes that one or both will be available this week. He isn't sure about defensive end Travis Griffith, who underwent X-rays Monday for a sprained ankle after playing only eight plays at Clemson. SPOTLIGHT PLAYER: One of the most underrated players on Virginia's team last year was Wali Rainer, now starting at inside linebacker for the Cleveland Browns. Successor Yubrenal Isabelle had played sparingly in his first two seasons, so there were questions following the 1998 season, but Isabelle has proven to be an able run stopper and had 14 tackles and a fumble recovery, plus a caused fumble, at Clemson. sports.yahoo.com
