You equate the teaching of values with the teaching of religion. Error. Our values are
expressed in our laws and our culture. You think they were transmitted from above, I
think they grew out of observations on socially utilitarian behaviour. But it is perfectly
possible to teach the values without digging into their sources.

Not error. The teaching of values necessarily implies the approval of the source of the values. If from my religious beliefs I believe that women and men should be treated equally, and from your observations on socially utilitarian behavior you teach my children that women are properly subservient to men (and fail them if they get the answer wrong on your test), you are teaching that your sources are right and my sources are wrong. There is no way to teach values without expressing approval or disapproval of the source of those values. Values don't exist in a vacuum; they only exist as the result of a belief in some source of values.

We're back to common sense, which tells us that school is a place for teaching
skills, knowledge, and basic social values, and that religion belongs in the home and
the church.

Your common sense. Not mine. I'm not asking that my religion be taught to other children. I AM asking that I have a fair chance to have what I see as the basic social values taught as opposed to what you see as the basic social values, whatever those are.

The problem is that you and E fail to recognize that in teaching what you view as basic social values (such as, in her case, that women have a right to an abortion) you are teaching my children to deny their beliefs. And you want me to sit by and give you a free hand to do it.

I won't.
