If one has decided that an authority is credible, and is free to change one's mind, it is, perforce, not arbitrary. One may not understand the rationale of each thing laid down, but one may accept it on the basis of the confidence reposed in the authority. The whole point is that we trust people and institutions all the time, and do not consider that indecent submission to authority....If the Church speaks for God, then it is right that one join the flock. If not, not. It is idle to blame people for doing the right thing given their premises....
