I thought ultimately the decision to buy one handler over another was made by the semi producer and not the test equipment supplier? Am I mistaken on that? Thanks in advance.

You are correct that the producer may make the decision, but that decision presumes that the handler interfaces with the ATE smoothly. Think about this...you are HWP and are developing a new Rambus tester. You want the tester to interface to Rambus devices so you start working with COHU, the recognized leader in handlers months before your product is to be introduced. Then at introduction, you simultaneously introduce with COHU the tester and device handler. In essence, this is exactly what has happened in the joint announcement by HWP and COHU last October 20.

The link there expired but this was the announcement:
cohu.com

Now, consider that COHU is a division of TER. If you are HWP, are you going to be as willing to contact COHU and share details of your new Rambus tester? I don't think so.
