Kagan Streaming Media Conference Oct. 6-7 to Uncover New Investment Opportunities, Business Models and Broadband Strategies

CARMEL, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 1999--With the basic platform and infrastructure in place, the streaming media industry is charging full-speed-ahead into a new era of rich media and services, embarking on an unprecedented quest for wealth and value creation.

And there's a sizeable fortune to be shared -- total direct revenues from end users could top $21 bil. by 2008, according to the latest Paul Kagan Associates research.

Billions more will be divvied up by bandwidth providers and other developers of enabling technologies. The course to this future will be discussed in depth at Kagan Seminars' conference on SIZING UP STREAMING MEDIA VALUES & FINANCE, Oct. 6-7 at The Park Lane Hotel in New York.

Anthony Bay, general manager of Microsoft's Streaming Media Division, will be the luncheon keynote speaker on Oct. 6.

"The next-generation of streaming media players best equipped to capitalize future market opportunities will be those focused on providing application services and intelligent bandwidth management solutions and developing content unique to this dynamic new medium," said Kagan analyst Jae Kim.

These new entrants have a lot to live up to. Since June 1998, the Kagan Streaming Media Index -- comprised of the five pure-plays, RealNetworks, InterVU, broadcast.com, ViewCast.com and AudioHighway -- has quietly outperformed the Kagan Internet Media and Internet Retailer Averages, which comprises some of the best known Web brands. Now, Yahoo!'s $4.8 bil. acquisition of broadcast.com also leaves a gaping opportunity for a pure-play streaming portal to emerge as the new darling of the sector.

Simply stamping out press releases, however, will not be a potent enough tonic to unlock the potential riches of the market. Investors, both public and private, are now cherrypicking their plays, and are more intent than ever to place their bets with industry leaders providing promising solutions, regardless of cost. Witness Cambridge, MA-based start-up, Akamai, which was recently valued at $1.3 bil. -- not by starry-eyed investors, but by Cisco Systems.

Yet an analysis of Webcaster business models by Kagan analysts shows streaming media content providers will be hard pressed to achieve profitability due to bandwidth costs and the inefficiencies of CPM-based ad sales.

Given these findings, how will broadband impact the industry? What solutions are emerging that will help shrink the bandwidth burden while boosting advertising revenues? What do content providers need, by way of partnerships or technological support, to create the winning business model? What is the secret sauce whetting the appetites of the industry? What are some of the untapped opportunities still open to entrepreneurs and financiers?

These and many other questions will be put on the table by Kagan Sr. Vice President Larry Gerbrandt and analyst Jae Kim and fielded by top industry visionaries and leaders.
