Good post. It's murder. It's what we all feared a year ago and we all knew it was coming. Ugh. DSL is doing its predicted intermediate market thing. Cable is going to have a rough time of it for several years. The saving grace is that 1mbps is upper limit for DSL, but is only a convenience limit for cable. Unfortunately that's a future advantage. Doesn't help the stock now.

re US West's $38 "MegaBit Select" DSL offering.

Here's a bit more information on that service. What's unique about the service is that, unlike most other broadband services, this one is not always on. Users have a two-hour time limit and are then disconnected. They can attempt to reconnect immediately, but since the service oversubscribes its ports there might not be one available. It's the broadband equivalent of a modem busy signal from an ISP.

After the service was introduced in Seattle at the beginning of the summer, US West told several customers that the standard always-on version of the service which costs just $10/month more was not available.

Meanwhile, AT&T recently sent out a newsletter to local cable customers in Seattle that says 170k of the 225k homes in Seattle passed by their cable lines have now been upgraded for @home service. AT&T must pay a rebate of about $10/month to local subscribers who don't yet have upgraded lines. I'm in a neighborhood that borders on an area served by a different company, but AT&T/TCI trucks have been in the area frequently pulling new wires through new boxes in the sidewalks.
