Today's quote from Basu.

"To defeat the BJP, we have decided to support the Congress. The question of political morality does not arise."

Mohan:
Remember that in the Indian villages and small towns, for every newspaper sold, there are many more who listen to that one newspaper read to them. For every TV and Radio, there are many more users.
So the reach is more than the sales figures.

I see 'Eenadu' is No.2. 'Malayala Manorama' appears to have slipped in its standing but I see 'Mathrubhumi' is in the list as well.

The entire population of Kerala is less than 3 crores. If we assume that 60% of this population is old enough to read, the 90.6 lakh readership implies that Malayala Manorama has half the market sewn up. It is very difficult to grow beyond this, especially since Kerala is already as literate as it is ever going to be and its population has stabilized.

A related point. Did you see that article in Rediff which said that an "equitable" redistribution of Loksabha seats will give Kerala 18 instead of the present 20? Ah..., the rewards of population control!

Vernacular newspapers top readership ratings

There seems to be a difference in the article you posted from the deccan herald and the one that I'm posting from India-Today. Either way the surveys shows interesting demographics.

Would readership equate to copies sold. In chai shops One paper would be read by many people who go there for chai.
