PeopleWatch: Shashi Gadia: The Data Magician Shashi Gadia is the Associate Professor of Computer Science at Ohio State University. His major interests are temporal, spatial, belief, security, statistical and incomplete data; database models, type hierarchy, languages, user interfaces, optimization, implementation and access methods; and pattern matching in spatio-temporal data. Shashi's current research revolves around dimensional data, the term covering databases for data over a dimensional space such as time, space and user beliefs. Shashi believes that a uniform approach for dimensional data assures upward compatibility. "When one migrates from lower forms of dimensional data to higher forms, e.g. ordinary data to spatio-temporal data, the existing application software would not need to be redeveloped." he says. Such a framework necessitates careful study of pragmatic issues such as database optimization, in which Shashi is probing at present. He holds a B.S. (Hons), 1969, Mathematics, Birla Institute of Tech. & Science (Pilani,India), an M.Sc. 1970, Mathematics, Birla Institute of of Tech. & Science,(Pilani,India), an M.S., Computer Science, Ohio State University, and Ph.D. 1977, Mathematics, University of Illinois.
