I know gay people that have married and it has always been for love. I see no difference in the love of same sex partners than in straight partners. Both gaze lovingly into each others eyes and it is beautiful in both instances.

Its not the entire reason, but I suspect many would be willing to forego the official piece of paper if there was some other way to handle the economic issues. Its just speculation on my part though. I know a few who complained about these issues while buying houses recently, car insurance is another thing (2 males in a house get different rates than a married couple) etc.
