It was a hate crime against Christians. But it is okay to:
a) bash
b) criticize
c) mock
d) hate
Christians.
It's the heart within a person that causes the crime.
Should we get rid of automobiles because they kill people?
Should we get rid of axes. Axes have killed people.

You're right that there has always been a lot of guns in our society. That's no change.

I can think of two things that have changed off the top of my head.

One is the entertainment media. There is lots more explicit depiction of both sex and violence today than then. Perhaps this has an impact on a small percentage of the population.

Another thing that's changed is that there are a lot more seriously mentally disturbed people outside of institutions today. I grew up near a state mental hospital. When we used to drive through their grounds years ago, the place was packed with patients. Now the place has hardly any mental patients. It was a lot easier to keep crazy people locked up once. Now they have rights. The policy change was made in the '80's and had a lot to do with the increase in homelessness.

I heard something on the radio about that guy in Ft. Worth. Apparently he was nuts. In 1967, he might have been locked up already. The guy who got into Congress with a gun and killed two guards some time back was another nut.
