I don't remember seeing this before:

POWERHOUSE BUILT FOR SPEED
Lucent has been turning up the heat in the converging voice and data networking equipment space. With its stock already one of Wall Street's biggest winners, it's possible Lucent is ready to gain yet another advantage in the market. The company acquired a healthy injection of speed via Nexabit Networks' terabit-speed switch routers and Ascend's Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switches. The Nexabit acquisition will give Lucent high-speed hardware for connecting directly to optical networking systems. Simply put, Lucent just one-upped Cisco on data transmission speed at the network's core, since Cisco has yet to achieve terabit speeds with its own equipment. The Nexabit acquisition further positions Lucent as a leader in delivering the next generation of broadband equipment. "By acquiring Ascend and Nexabit, the company can offer both ATM and Internet protocol technologies. Lucent will be able to cannibalize itself rather than lose market share to a competitor," said Michael Neiberg, a communications equipment analyst with Hambrecht & Quist. Demand for this type of next- generation communications continues to be strong. And Lucent's recent broadband contract wins from Level 3, Telefonica Data, and Telstra -- along with the fact that Ascend equipment is already being used by 27 of the 30 largest communications service providers in the world -- have renewed interest in Lucent on Wall Street. Nieber, along with most analysts on the street, rates Lucent a Buy or better; the investment bank Salomon Smith Barney has included the stock on its list of "Ten Exceptional Names" -- stocks that represent appealing investment opportunities for 2000. "It's just a powerhouse," said Rick Berry, analyst with J.P. Turner & Company. Now it's a powerhouse built for speed. [Red Herring, 10/99]
