She was weird and was home-schooling her boy, poor little fella.

Occasionally I have heard people wanting to do home schooling for academic reasons but it seems like nine times out of ten they are religious fundamentalists.

One thing that concerns me with home schooling is any ability to teach mathematics at all. When I go grocery shopping in the day now I see these moms and kids trying to figure out what 30% off a $4.50 item is. Many seem to have difficulty with fractions and decimals, basic stuff. One time I was in the checkout line and the clerk was trying to explain to this woman why an item that was 50% off and then an additional 50% was not marked down to $0. Its really sad seeing adults that are completely unprepared like this... definitely a failure of our school system... but anyway, with regards to home schooling I have to wonder how many of these people are trying to teach their own kids, being woefully inadequately prepared (except for perhaps bible study).
