Akamai Technologies IPO lurks in the wings

FOSTER CITY, Calif. (CBS.MW) -- In early July, Inktomi Chief Executive David Peterschmidt hinted at making acquisitions. On Thursday, he came through with a deal that brings the company closer to solving all of the virtual world's bottleneck problems.

Inktomi (INKT: news, msgs) said it's buying privately-held WebSpective Software for $106 million in stock. It's the first acquisition to compliment its keystone product, Traffic Server.

The delivery of content distribution, which WebSpective brings to the table, is a huge piece of technology to extend Traffic Server into the Web hosting market and in the enterprise market, said Inktomi's Peterschmidt on a conference call with analysts.

This deal is not the company's key announcement to enter the enterprise or corporate market noted Peterschmidt. But it's a significant component to announcements expected to be made later this year.
