Allegiance Telecom Selects Alcatel's Industry Leading Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers
Agreement Reinforces Alcatel's Foothold in CLEC Market
DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 21, 1999--As further confirmation of its ADSL worldwide market leadership, Alcatel (NYSE:ALA - news) today announces Allegiance Telecom is deploying the Alcatel 1000 ADSL digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) for its ADSL services. Allegiance, a leading competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) to small and medium-sized businesses, is adding DSL capabilities to its complete package of voice, data and Internet services for its business customers.
The agreement is a significant achievement for Alcatel's ADSL leadership. Because Allegiance has a strong national network, it is a key CLEC target for Alcatel. The deployment is a strategic win for both companies. Allegiance's selection of Alcatel's DSL platform places the CLEC at the center of one of the fastest-growing markets with major competitive advantages based on its widespread collocation footprint within Regional Bell Operating Company (RBOC) central offices.
''Allegiance Telecom's leadership in the CLEC community and collocation success is to be commended. Alcatel is pleased they are deploying our widely accepted DSL platform for its growing business and new service offering,'' said Krish Prabhu, COO of Alcatel Telecom, and CEO of Alcatel USA. ''ADSL is enabling CLECs to realize additional revenue opportunities, offer full-service telecommunication services and increase their competitive position. With ADSL, CLECs can offer affordable alternative access services to small and medium-sized businesses in support of core business applications such as internet access, electronic mail, e-commerce and bulk data transfer.''
The leading supplier of ADSL systems with more than 50 percent of the worldwide market, Alcatel has been supplying industry-standard end-to-end ADSL solutions since 1995. The Alcatel 1000 DSLAM supports a wide variety of service packages, including asymmetric and symmetric offerings. It is fully NEBS Level 3 compliant, and can be seamlessly collocated to provide excellent density, power utilization and heat dissipation in collocation environments. It also supports full-rate discrete multi-tone (DMT) ADSL as well as reduced rate G.Lite ADSL on the same hardware.
Alcatel's ADSL Expertise
Alcatel's xDSL solutions are fully scalable and are available on a variety of service platforms, including line cards for Alcatel's industry leading Litespan® New World Digital Loop Carrier (NWDLC); Alcatel 1000, a high-density central office Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM); and compact, environmentally hardened mini-DSLAM packages used for low-density subscriber DLC situations. All Alcatel xDSL service platforms are fully NEBS (Level 3) compliant and integrate seamlessly into service provider networks.
Alcatel's ADSL solutions are deployed by Ameritech, BellSouth, SBC Communications, and Bell Atlantic. Alcatel's worldwide customer base includes Bell Canada, Singapore Telecom, Telia, British Telecom, Belgacom, Telefonica, France Telecom, Telecom Italia, and P.T. Telecom of Indonesia.
