As requested - but more: Further researching interaccess.com Since today was the first DSL demo day for InterAccess, I drove downtown, found a metered spot, threw in a few quarters, walked a block to Interaccess, was buzzed in, had some cookies and talked with a couple of sales people. The price was ($72/mo for 3yr contract - $96/mo for month to month) for a fixed (but not public) IP address. A public IP address is an additional $80/mo. The service is available downtown in the business area, but in my area of Chicago - not quite yet. Picking up the gadget at the computer end of the DSL line - it was about the size of a paperback book, with the label CopperRocket on the bottom. See coppermountain.com for more information, especially the table of copper loop distances vs bandwidth. Interaccess was quoting 1.56mbits/sec, which I am sure it was, since the other end of their demo DSL line was downstairs in the same building - at most a couple of hundred feet. For the Central Office end of the connection see: coppermountain.com A subscriber does not have to use the CopperRocket, but can choose from the list of compatible devices: coppermountain.com A very nice picture of a complete system, including carrier interconnections -> coppermountain.com A paragraph from the document above: "By delivering Frame Relay over DSL lines, carriers maximize their ROI by utilizing inexpensive dry copper to provision a DSL line versus expensive conditioned lines for T1 circuits, used to deliver traditional Frame Relay services. Additionally, carriers can offer either basic Frame Relay services or managed Frame Relay services with end-to-end service level guarantees using CopperEdge and companion CopperView network management software. Service level agreements (SLAs) for network availability and uptime are increasingly required by business users for fail-safe protection. SLAs and other premium services provide an opportunity for carriers to increase profitability through differentiated service offerings, all of which can be delivered via the Copper Mountain DSL product suite." The Central Office end will also bolt up to ATM lines.
