Pace to launch digital TV in Israel

Pace Micro Technology today announced a deal to supply 75,000 digital satellite set-top boxes to Yes, Israel?s leading digital satellite broadcaster. Yes will use Pace?s digital set-top box technology to launch Israel?s first digital TV service at the end of 1999.

The order marks Pace?s entry into Israel?s Pay TV market and confirms Pace?s digital leadership world-wide, having now delivered digital technology to 19 international broadcasters.

"Our proven track record in digital TV and experience of News Corp technology made us a natural choice of launch partner for Yes," explains Graham North, Pace?s Regional Director for Europe, Middle East and Africa. "We were the only manufacturer with the technology ready to ensure a successful digital launch for Yes in the time scales needed.

"We are very excited about entering Israel for the first time," he adds. "Israel holds great potential for digital TV. Research shows the market is receptive to new technology, as over 46 per cent of the population own mobile phones and close to 15 per cent are already accessing the Internet. Compare this to the UK?s 22 per cent and 19 per cent respectively and the prospects for the rapid uptake of digital TV look very promising."

Eitan Rub, Yes Chief Executive Officer: "The Israeli market is eagerly anticipating the arrival of digital TV with its increased choice of programmes and services. Our digital launch will mark a revolution in broadcasting in Israel, offering a wider selection of content and applications and a better quality viewing experience."

Subscribers will rent Pace?s set-top boxes direct from the broadcaster and will be offered over 100 new TV channels, providing a mixture of local and American programming. Interactive services and an impulse pay-per view service will follow the launch and a multi-lingual Electronic Programme Guide in Hebrew, Russian, Arabic and English will provide ease of navigation around the multitude of channels.

Those Sony boxes don't seem to have a cable modem in them. And this article says "fire-wire", not Sony's brand "iLink"............................

September 16, 1999:

Cablevision in $1B Sony Box Deal
New York -- Sony Corp. of America landed a $1 billion deal Thursday to supply Cablevision Systems Corp. with 3 million digital set-top boxes and infrastructure for offering advanced interactive cable services beginning next summer.

The deal is the first U.S. advanced set-top win for Sony, which will provide OpenCable-compliant boxes running on the "Aperios" operating system it developed with General Instrument Corp.

Cablevision said the system -- plus yet-to-be-chosen middleware and applications -- will enable such services as video-on-demand; e-mail and Web browsing; customer access to their cable-account profile, which they can configure at will; expanded digital and interactive programming; and home-networking support.

Cablevision plans to begin deploying the boxes "aggressively" beginning next summer in its metropolitan market here, which passes about 4 million homes, CEO James Dolan said during a news-conference call announcing the deal.

Dolan sidestepped questions about Cablevision's strategy for putting the set-tops into a consumer retail-sales environment, saying the MSO would emphasize marketing the services enabled by the device, rather than the device itself.

The primary Sony set-top will incorporate an IEEE-1394 "fire-wire" standard high-speed digital interface for linking the box to other devices such as digital TV sets.

Sony and Cablevision said they would work to leverage the 1394 interface with Sony's "HAVi" (Home Audio/Visual interoperability) home-networking software and the Aperios OS to expand the potential universe of applications enabled by the set-top.
