goldsnow, re: Scary times for Yeltsin ... I hold with Yaacov, that it is possible that Yeltsin('s followers) are behind the bomb attacks. If so, most probably at some time while Yeltsin still is in office the PM (Putin) will succeed in stopping their proceeding. Then we will know.
Otherwise I think Chechen/Daghestan or Lebed or both of them are equally plausible for me.

I think the key point for Yeltsin (and maybe his successors? :-) ) is that there are now uncontrollable attacks from outside Russia, while up to now he could largely count on "support" (complicity) by the West and its' budgets. I have heard the FBI has proposed to send some of their investigators to Moscow for support <VBG>.

I think Yeltsin could not see this coming and feel like this is a sudden turn of the boat by nearly 180 degree. Not good for his successors to rely on the West also.
