They didn't call it "painting the tape" back in 1974 but the practice was still performed. In Richard Ney's book The Wall Street Gang, he details the shenanigans and maneuvers the specialists do routinely.

It's an eye opener for those who care to read a little history. Ney calls it the greatest financial conspiracy in modern times!
