Just to put it all in perspective, we're still talking microcomputers here...

Tale of the Tape - Copper chip MCM vs Aluminium chip MCM

Copper chip MCM
Aluminium chip MCM
Processor Speed
637 MHz
500 MHz
Number of processors on MCM
12+2
10+2
Number of chips on MCM
31
29
Number of transistors on MCM
more than 1.4 billion
1 billion
Number of transistors on L2 Cache
chip
121 million
60 million
Level 2 (L2) Cache chip size
16.5 mm
17.3mm
L2 Cache Memory
16 MB
8 MB

NOTE: The L2 cache chip is twice the density (transistor count and array size) yet occupies 10 percent less
area than its G5 counterpart. IBM copper interconnect chip technology makes this possible.

Dan, Re: metal grains that make up the wire are physically pushed aside by the electron wind...

The key is to put one of those little umbrellas you get with rum drinks on the CPU. It works best if you stick the umbrella on with heat sink compound. That protects against the "electron wind".

Send that one to Mike Magee!
