Thanks for your helpful post. Perhaps the "catalyst" you mentioned, one that will turn the tide once and for all, will be ISE options trading (at least this is a known future event). Other than that, we will have to wait and see what kind of deals they brew up. In the meantime, volumes do tend to increase over time, and on-line trading does seems rather more likely to increase than to decrease. The long term trend, therefore, is inherently positive (setting aside ECN concerns).

This is interesting:

In 3Q98, NITE earned 13 cents. If the company hits the new average estimate of .35 in 3Q99, that will be a 169% increase in earnings year-over-year.

Before the October correction in 1998, NITE was trading at about $10/share. A 169% increase would result in a share price of about $27/share.

This suggests somewhat of a reasonable downside limit, one that, whether or not by coincidence, is about the same as the bottom put in a couple of weeks back (for a double bottom).
