Microsoft, Dell, Excite At Home, Others Join to Challenge eBay

San Jose, California, Sept. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp., Dell Computer Corp., Excite At Home Corp. and other companies have formed an online auction network to challenge eBay Inc.'s dominance in the fastest-growing Web consumer business.

The alliance, which also includes Lycos Inc. and several smaller companies, will start its network on Monday, said Melissa Walia, spokeswoman for Excite At Home. Each company will maintain its own auction site, she said, but all items up for bid will be available on every site in the network.

It's the latest effort by a competitor to crack industry leader eBay's hold on the online-auction market. With about 4 million auction listings, eBay dominates rivals Yahoo! Inc. and Amazon.com Inc., which have 500,000 and 100,000 listings respectively.

The new network will be administered by closely held FairMarket Inc., based in Woburn, Massachusetts, which already runs auction sites for Lycos and Dell. The news was reported earlier in the Wall Street Journal.

Spokesmen for Microsoft and Dell declined to comment. Lycos couldn't be reached.

San Jose, California-based eBay's shares have risen 39 percent in the past month. EBay first sold shares to the public in September 1998 at $18, and in March split the stock 3 for 1. The shares closed at 151 3/4 yesterday.
