I agree entirely. And you do have to wonder if we do hit some sort of crisis situation with fuel costs at some point that the need for efficient fuel use will change the dynamics of home delivery (note that I am not so bearish that I am predicting a fuel crisis - I'm just saying that anything can happen in the next 20 years).

On a different but somewhat related topic - I've heard of sites that are now gathering buyers of identical items together to purchase in bulk, and thereby benefit from the bulk discount. A friend of mine recently purchased a palm pilot in such a way. Such a system may be difficult and inconvenient for the average consumer - but then again, it may not. And you have to wonder what impact such sites might have on Amazon (as it moves into other retail categories).
