subtleties

they issue here is the fact that evolution is not REQUIRED LEARNING it can still be taught in kansas but is not required to graduate. they are not trying to block the teaching just making it not required.

That doesn't make much difference. To me it reads "a certain religion will get upset over this particular subject, so let's make it optional". But you can't adequately teach Biology without covering evolution, and you can't adequately teach science without including Biology.

The future economic impact of biotechnology could dwarf the 1970's-1990's impact of the integrated circuit. We need everyone to know math and science for the USA to keep kicking economic but in the 21st century -- or should we let certain churches open a new dark age where people can optionally stay un-educated in a world knowledge is increasingly important for success?

but is not required
You're only giving half the story. The idiots in Kansas also insist that if you do teach natural selection then you must MUST (as in being fired!) also teach creationism. That speaks volumes about their confidence that the idea of creationism could stand on it's own.
