CS First Boston analyst Ray Sharma today initiated coverage on Canada's Sierra Wireless (SW.TO) at "buy" with an $18 price target.

In a research report, Sharma called Sierra the market leader in supplying wireless modems and chipsets for cellular digital packet data networks and said it is poised to capitalize on the growth opportunities in digital wireless data networks.

Sharma also initiated coverage on Research In Motion (RIMM), another Canadian concern, with a "hold" recommendation.

Although Sharma called Research In Motion a leader in developing radio and consumer electronics technology for narrowband wireless applications and said it has "a winner product," he suggested investors wait for greater revenue visibility before investing in the company.

Shares of Sierra Wireless closed yesterday's trading session up $0.80 at $15.00, while Research In Motion finished at $33.88, down $0.88 from its previous close.
