PAL,
"""AT the surface, Armstrong is a genius with that cable investment""
The cable investment is to allow T to compete with the local phone companies at a time when local phone service including data is rapidly switching to cellular. The local Bells have an exclusive for local service on their copper wires. Witness NXLK with their radio licenses in all the major metro area installing a nationwide fibre net with last mile by radio to provide local and long distance and data. Anyone can compete in the cellular area for local calling, armstrong is wasting T's money. I was at a party recently and many 20+ age group people had cell phones. I asked them all how many have a phone at home also. Not one person in the group has another phone. Many have company supplied phones with free nights and weekends so their monthly bill is zero. They have one number, free caller ID, free long distance, voice mail, call forwarding and all the other services that you pay extra for with the Bells. Armstrong should invest in a nationwide CDMA network rather than cable. How far away is TV service over the airwaves? Not far, its just data. I recall sitting in board meetings whenATM's were new technology. The other board members didn't want to invest in the technology because not one person on the BOD had an ATM card. I posed the question, how many of your kids have an ATM card? Now, who doesn't have one?
