Currently you can only use the direct connect feature within your own region. I don't know if NY and MASS is in the same region, best to check with your local Nextel office. Most of Nextel's regions are quite large, and getting larger. Within a year or two coast to coast direct connect should become a reality. Of course cellular calls between regions has always been available.
