In July, ACT UP SF maintained a vocal and visible presence at the 11th International AIDS Conference in Vancouver, Canada. ACT UP members coordinated the "Vancouver Bloodbath", a controversial action that garnered international attention. During the demonstration, angry activists stormed a keynote pharmaceutical symposium on anti-viral therapies and doused drug company funded researchers Margaret Fischl, Paul Volberding and others with fake blood. ACT UP demanded that AZT be pulled from the market and sought to raise awareness about the severe toxicitys and immune suppressive nature of anti-viral drugs. Activists criticized the conflict of interest that impedes progress to a cure for AIDS and demanded that AIDS research focus on strengthening the human immune system not killing a virus.

In October, the controversial ACT UP chapter again gained international attention by staging an action against the multimillion dollar corporate giant San Francisco AIDS Foundation for their acceptance of drug company money to promote harmful, experimental pharmaceutical products. Screaming activists dumped 25 pounds of used kitty litter on Executive Director Pat Christen, whom the community refers to as "Fat Cat Pat" due to her inflated salary of over $140,000.
