Taiwan Semiconductor 2000 Capex To Hit US$2B - Chairman

TAIPEI -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSM) will increase capital expenditure to around US$2 billion in 2000, said company Chairman Morris Chang on Thursday.

That compares with the approximately US$1.29 billion the company recently said it would spend in 1999.

The world's largest dedicated chip foundry has been operating at full capacity for several months amid a strong rebound in the global chip industry.

Speaking at a semiconductor conference in Taipei, Chang also reiterated his belief that the chip foundry model his company pioneered will continue to gain momentum over the next decade.

"The output of chip foundries could well amount to as much as 50% of all chip production in ten years," he said.
