Soapbox..... Someone asked for my opinion about MCOM. This was my response: from the AOL thread. ++++++++++++++++++++++ There's lightning in the sky and underground these days as IP convergence hits all quarters. The wireless gang should provide a grand stake for mobile devices - PDAs, phones and laptops, etc. Fiber and broadband aren't to be ignored either. And satellite data carriers are soon ready to provide wireless switching capacity to unheard of locals as well as all the gaps in between. I'm less enthralled these days with the bandwidth wars and more interested in what's going to happen inside bandwidth. For bandwidth is still essentially dumb carrying capacity. In this next phase we are entering, you will begin to hear a new term - bandwidth apps. Sounds wacky, but this is where my heart and soul has been. Making bandwidth "smart" - no pun - is where the REAL wars will be fought. For bandwidth becomes "smart" when we articulate the power of thought INSIDE bandwidth instead of at the edges. The world still lives at the edges of fear. Nothing happens, no value is added anywhere unless someone, something, somewhere CONTROLS the data and information. So we all have to "go to" places to get anything done. For it's still a "they gotta come to me" world: quid pro quo....Old Business model, etc. I really believe we are right on the verge of this Era of the Individual I've been talking about. And the next century will be called "The Knowledge Century." Things are going to massively OPEN up for individuals will gradually control the keys to this virtual kingdom in the form of control, power and flexibility over data and information. Ubiquitous cheap bandwidth will get us there. And technologies coming from companies like Novell will become the Virtual switchboards of access, authentication, articulation and distribution of reams and reams of objectified value added data and information. For the power and energy of individual thought - in the form of innovation, intuition and creativity - will inexorably unbundle the old power/control paradigm over data/information which is holding us back right now. NDS is NOT just for companies. It's for INDIVIDUALS who run those companies, own those companies, build those companies and buy from those companies. The Rise of "Networks" And Decline of Companies And going forward, we are going to hear less and less about "companies" and more and more about "networks." For "networks" will supplant companies as the focus of all energy, ideas, power and growth. Networks composed of individuals, groups, communities, neighborhoods, even families will define the foundation of the future. "Companies" and "businesses" as we know them today will retreat into the warehouse districts of life - becoming vast fullfillment centers supporting these expanding virtual distibution conduits which will explode going forward. The word "business" will become an old, dying, metaphor for an past era where arrogance, power and quid pro quo ruled. The new word of the future which will define this era will be "service." For the game has changed. A new energy is fueling this trend which hasn't yet been understood by the world: helping and serving others. Technology has reached the point where it is finally intersecting with spirit. And the collision is wonderous. You will hear more and more about the evangelization of ideas, concepts and business models. Reading about technology today is like reading a book about values. For we are returning to our roots. We are learning how to communicate, network, help, serve, share, cooperate, add value all over once again. It's an age old story, but it will be maligned as this positive energy radiates more strongly throughout the world. For we are seeing the energy of freedom in action and those who would like to slow down this train and control it will try very hard to limit, cap and restrict this trend. I say the genie is out of the bottle. Ride the wave. It'll be one massive Tsunami. Greater than anything we have seen today. It will greatly surprise the world. Time to step down from the soapbox and retire once again. Peace. GO!!!
