Lucy is being tranformed. Looks like we get to dream about a boat on a river and marshmallow pies over the weekend.

Sony To Provide Set-Tops, Delivery Platform for Cablevision

September 17, 1999 -- Sony has agreed to develop a new set-top box and cable delivery platform for Cablevision Systems in a huge deal that some observers is worth as much as $1 billion.

Among the features to be included in the set-top box will be always-on, Web-enhanced television, e-mail, interactive gaming and video on demand. The set-tops will be OpenCable-compliant, the company said. This refers to the CableLabs initiative to standardize broadband set-top hardware.

Navigation for the Internet-enabled portion of the service, which includes Web-enhanced television and e-mail, will be by remote control or an optional wireless keyboard, Sony says. The box will be built around Sony's Aperios operating system.

The announcement comes just days after Motorola shook up the set-top industry by announcing it was acquiring General Instrument. The new platform and set-tops will be deployed in metropolitan New York.
