Goldman B2B Report Boosts Software and Internet
Stocks
By Cintra Scott

A 112-PAGE Goldman Sachs report on the lucrative prospects for
business-to-business Internet usage sharply bid up the share prices for several
software and Internet stocks today, VerticalNet, i2 and Ariba among them.

According to Goldman's estimates, the B2B industry's revenues will grow from
$114 billion in 1999 to $1.5 trillion in 2004 -- a stunning 68% year-over-year
compounded growth rate. VerticalNet soared 8.7% to $36 and Ariba 7.2% to $133
on the news Friday.

Goldman analyst Rakesh Sood identifies two main groups of B2B opportunities:
Internet infrastructure companies (making the tools that run online marketplaces)
and e-market companies (bringing together corporate buyers and sellers). Neither
group contains many publicly traded companies -- yet.

Nevertheless, Sood named several companies, big and small, that are likely to
benefit -- SAP (SAP), Oracle (ORCL) and i2 (ITWO), which, he says, are
"attractive vehicles for participating in B2B growth." Other public companies he
mentions are newcomers like Ariba (ARBA), CommerceOne (CMRC), Exodus
(EXDS), Open Market (OMKT) and VerticalNet (VERT). Stay tuned, many more
investment opportunities are appearing in the IPO pipeline.
