JDS Uniphase buys Hull firm Karyn Standen The Ottawa Citizen JDS Uniphase Corp. has acquired AFC Technologies Inc., a Hull-based manufacturer of high performance fibre optic products for the telecommunications industry. Financial terms of the deal, which closed last month, were not disclosed. AFC, a privately held, three-year-old company, has 12 employees and revenue "in the millions", a company spokesperson said. No layoffs are expected as a result of its acquisition, added founder and president Dan Yang. AFC develops high-power broadband sources and optical amplifiers for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM). DWDM technology can transmit multiple light signals, carrying voice, video or text, simultaneously over a single optical fibre, thus significantly boosting the transmission capacity of existing fibre optic networks. Recently, AFC developed advanced optical amplifiers to enable customers to reduce manufacturing costs of network systems while achieving high bandwidth performance. AFC's customers include "many" of the major network equipment manufacturers, Ms. Yang said, declining to name the company's clients. JDS Uniphase acquired AFC because it offers a range of amplifiers that differ from JDS Uniphase's product set in terms of performance and features, said JDS Uniphase spokesman Marc Rene de Cotret. AFC's technology "will enhance our optical amplifier portfolio. Part of our strategy is to have the broadest portfolio out in the market." He added there is no product overlap between the two companies. Amplifiers boost signals. Without one, an optical signal can travel only a few hundred kilometres before it loses strength. Ms. Yang said AFC began acquisition talks with JDS Uniphase at the beginning of this year. At the time, the company had just been formed through a merger between Nepean's JDS Fitel Inc. and Uniphase Corp. of San Jose, California.
