Bertelsmann launches Spanish on-line bookstore
MADRID, Sept 16 (Reuters) - German media giant Bertelsmann
<BTGGga.F> and Spanish publisher Grupo Planeta launched a
Spanish-language version of Bertelsmann's Internet bookstore
"books on-line" (bol) on Thursday.
Executives from the two companies said the site was the
biggest on-line bookstore in Spanish with an initial range of
125,000 titles.
"This joint venture is worthwhile because the number of
users in Spain is comparatively low...and will boom in the next
two to three years" said Klaus Eierhoff, chief executive of
Bertelsmann's multimedia department.
Bertelsmann chose Planeta for the 50-50 joint venture
because of its distribution capacity, Eierhoff added.
The two companies have applied for European Commission
approval for the new company, BOL Espana, at www.es.bol.com.
The two groups were studying further alliances, said Jose
Manuel Lara, Planeta's chief executive officer.
Bertelsman already sells books via the Internet in English,
German, French and Dutch and plans to launch BOL in Switzerland,
Italy and Japan soon.
Bertelsmann has joint ventures with France's Havas <AGHP.PA>
and Italy's Mondadori <MNDI.MI> to compete with the U.S. rival
amazon.com <AMZN.O>.
