vmlinux will not be in /usr/src/linux, but in a subdirectory... /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot.

Also, never rename your /vmlinuz unless you are ready to replace it immediately. You can copy your /vmlinuz to /vmlinuz.old before doing what E tells you, but to rename your kernel prior to a long procedure is just foolhardy.
