Alcatel as buyer of handset division?

"Alcatel is eyeing new consumer markets, such as screen phones. Tchuruk
declined to comment on rumors that Alcatel is developing a Web-surfing
phone for America Online Inc.

One area to watch, analysts say, is Alcatel's wireless strategy. In Europe,
it trails other firms in selling wireless network gear and cell phones.

Alcatel has partnered with Motorola Inc. to sell new digital wireless gear.
Motorola also has a wireless alliance with Cisco. Tchuruk says Alcatel
can be a bigger wireless player. 'Our market position is not ridiculous,'
he said.
