Toshiba Hiking Output Of Flash-Memory Chips; Curbing DRAM Production

TOKYO -- Toshiba Corp. said Monday it plans to shift some of its semiconductor production to flash-memory chips from price-ravaged dynamic random access memory chips.

Toshiba has decided to gradually convert part of the DRAM production line at its Yokkaichi facility in Japan into a flash-memory manufacturing line, a spokeswoman said.

As a result, Toshiba's flash-memory output should total around six million 64-megabit chips a month by the March 31 end of the fiscal year, about double current production.

Demand for flash-memory chips, which unlike regular memory chips continue to hold data even when their power is cut, is growing for use in such goods as digital cameras.

With price weakness for DRAM chips dragging on, Toshiba estimates its semiconductor division alone will post an operating loss of 70 billion yen ($653.4 million) in the first half ending Sept. 30. But the company expects 20 billion yen in operating profit from the division in the second half, in part because of the increased emphasis on flash memory chips.
