Copper production continues to go up, mostly due to Chile and the radical structural change of SX/EW technology.

In 1990, world production was about 9 million metric tonnes, with about 1.5 from Chile and 1.6 from the US. By 1998 world production reached 11.9 million metric tonnes, with the US at 1.85 and Chile at 3.66 (up almost 150%) I should also mention that Indonesia went from 178 thousand metric tonnes to 750 thousand metric tonnes during this same timeframe. These mines also spit out a decent amount of gold and silver, which copper miners are most happy to get rid of promptly at market prices.
