similar to angela's ashes in that it is less what it is about than the viewpoint on life, the use of language, the keeping moving forward despite all the craziness.

as far as time frame, it starts when he gets to america about 3 years after frank gets here. he starts as a longshoreman and one day goes to a play and decides he wants to be an actor. he walks right up to the producer of the play and gets an audition. he gets the part and is a success. somehow he gets on to the jack parr show. he drinks a lot and it's part of his schtick. he and some partners open the first single's bar in the world in nyc. before that women either weren't allowed in bars or there were segregated small sections for women. he meets lots of famous actors and actresses. he also gets married. goes back to ireland for christmas to show off his financial success and his bride and find his partners back in the us aren't covering his checks. struggles to get back. marriage runs into difficulties as he drinks too much and isn't faithful. has other jobs including gold smuggling into india. several interesting aspects as we see the mother, the father, etc. from angela's ashes through different eyes and in a different time period. much later in time. the mother is moved to nyc. on one trip to ireland, malachy goes to england to see his father who is in jail for the 23rd or 24th time for drunkenness. soon thereafter, he writes the mother and says he hasn't had the drink for years and has changed and won't she have him back. she does. it is a disaster.

but again if i am doing a good job in showing the plot, it really isn't the plot. it is the adventure and the great use of words. as i believe i said earlier, it took me a little while thinking he was just a frank mccourt wannabe. but that passed. the book is very very good in its own right. and at the end i thought to myself, if this was the book that everyone was raving about instead of angela's ashes and i read this book, i would have been very pleased.
