Re: Did they say systems were available from stock ?

IBMs are off the shelf, Compaqs are pre-configure order through PC Workshop - whatever that is :-)

But they are out there, I had to put together bid list for a half dozen systems Friday, and I called several companies including Compaq to check some of the specs

<<I don't care for desktops and mini towers, I prefer to spec deskside full towers with oversize PS and extra fans. You never have problems that way - if more people payed a little more attention to the box and worried a little less about the MHZ of the processor, they'd find they had far fewer problems a year or so later - but that's not an appropriate topic for this thread. The PS on the Compaq is rated 200 watts "continuous", I'm not thrilled with that number>>

They say they can ship immediately, they use their own motherboard that was designed with support from AMD.

I also talked to someone from Polywell (they let you spec a full tower case) the guy I spoke with was talkative so I asked some questions. He said they'd been shipping for 3 weeks, he'd personally sold over 80 Athlon systems, the largest single order he'd heard of from one of the other order takers (there are 8 in his section) was 20 Athlon systems, and they've had no tech support problems with the systems - I would guess that the sales people have routine questions for the tech support group and so stay in contact.

He sounded genuinely impressed with the lack of tech support problems - sounds to me like at minimum several hundred from them are in the field, and that would be exceptional. We order a lot of Gateways (they also let you spec a full tower case), and have problems with about 1 in 25.

Polywell is using the MSI board. He said they also tried FIC, had a couple fail burn in, so they're sticking with MSI for now.
