Tom Byrne from Individual Investor likes CS this week:

"THUMBS UP
Cabletron Systems (NYSE: CS - Quotes, News, Boards)
Cabletron, based in Rochester, New Hampshire, the Live Free or Die State (arguably the best motto of all 50 States) makes networking solutions, including Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, Token Ring, fiber distributed data interface and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switches.

Last week, Cabletron made a presentation at the SG Cowen Technology Conference in Boston that had the analysts in attendance buzzing. Cabletron talked at length about new products, including layer 3 switching, digital subscriber line (DSL) routers and a Spectrum network platform. This caused several analysts to raise their estimates for the fiscal year ending February 2001. Before the conference the mean estimate for 2001 was $0.59 per share. After the conference the mean estimate moved up to $0.62 per share.

Although Cabletron has a history of missing estimates due to product delays or other miscues, it has soundly beat estimates the last two quarters. Last quarter, analysts were looking for a penny profit and the company came in with earnings of $0.04 per share. I told investors to expect a positive surprise last quarter and I am duplicating my forecast for this one.

Cabletron's new products are gaining wider market acceptance and the management team has been doing a better job of getting products to market faster and developing the right products for customers' needs. I don't think the last two quarters were a fluke. I think they are a portent of stronger sales and earnings for Cabletron for at least the next two years, probably more. I think Cabletron will post earnings of $0.08 per share for this quarter, $0.02 above estimates, and I like the company's long-term outlook."
