You're right, it is fun to speculate. Both you and cfoent have done a good job of thinking out of the box.

Cfoent's Compaq would break their mold in the street's eyes, as well as within the company. A new leader and a new direction; what a concept. Some may ask "wouldn't it make more sense for them to buy Palm to do that?" A case could be made that in the near future, every Qualcomm phone sold will have net access, so the purchase really moves CPQ closer to the internet space, but in a way they understand (manufacturing) rather than in a way they didn't (AltaVista).

The public change in perception caused by a CPQ or Toshiba purchase, though, focusing on the potential exploding market in Wireless Internet Devices would be good for us indeed.

I have this feeling, as perhaps you do, that the Q may just hook up with someone unexpected by the Wall Street wonks. The choice won't be obvious until it's announced, then we'll hear what a logical (and obvious) choice it was!

Sadly, the pressure not to be wrong by oneself keeps analysts from publishing anything too far from general consensus. Too bad, because these folks actually are quite knowledgeable and if we could talk to them off the record I'd bet we wouldn't have so much of the heavily subscribed to belief that they're idiots.

Toshiba does make wireless products already. They manufacture phones for Audiovox. I'm not sure which phones they make since Audiovox offers all three standards, CDMA, TDMA, and GSM
