I think you have a valid point. Clearly, 1999 has been a "Revenge of the Actively Managed Funds" year, at least for me. My managed funds are doing considerably better than my index funds. Last time that happened was 1994.

If we are in the process of establishing a major market top leading to a decided bear trend, then:
1. Market tops are characterised by higher valuations in a smaller and smaller number of stocks. Usually, these are blue chips and not the mid- to small-caps.
2. Hence, the mid- and small-caps usually lag at market tops and do not lead again until the bear market bottom has been realised.
