before going wild with your new I888, be sure to check the roaming charges between US and Europe: They are also - quite wild! (Unless you are part of a large corporate special deal...).

New WAP phone launched: The R320

Thanx to Lax3G on the Yahoo thread. The R380 (another phone) is also due out in volume during the first Q next year.

Date: Wednesday, September 22 1999

Today at a spectacular event in Hong Kong, Ericsson globally unveiled the R320, a high-performance dual band mobile phone. With its sleek and elegant design, Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)- functionality, calendar and big display, it is a phone for the customer who appreciates functionality and efficiency. The R320 is Ericsson's third WAP-product.

During 1999, Ericsson has launched a completely new product portfolio, where the R320 is an important new addition, which gives powerful connectivity decisively designed. The R320 is only 15 mm thin and weighs less than 100 grams. It is Ericsson's third WAP-product, after the mobile companion MC218, available on selected markets, and the smartphone R380, available in volumes during Q1 2000.

The R320 has a WAP-browser to access Internet content. WAP is a microbrowser especially developed for mobile use and the main world-wide industry standard for providing Internet communications and advanced services on digital mobile phones and other wireless terminals.

"We have now unveiled our third WAP-product," says Jan Ahrenbring, Vice President Marketing and Communications at Ericsson Mobile Communications. "As the first WAP-products come out on the market, WAP-services will emerge as well. The market will grow as devices leverage from content and the other way around. What we will then see is both local content, services such as ordering movie tickets or take away food, and global content, such as news and entertainment," says Jan Ahrenbring.

In-built modem and infrared communication capability make the R320 an
efficient communication tool. The infrared functionality not only ensures easy and effective connection, it also allows to send and receive electronic business cards, ring melodies and phone book entries from one phone to another. Its voice memo function allows you to record up to twenty voice memos. The R320 has a calendar for keeping track of meetings, events and anniversaries. Synchronisation of the calendar in the R320 and a PC will be supported with the IrMC 1.1 open synchronisation standard, as a world first for GSM phones.

To promote Internet access using a mobile phone, Ericsson was a leading part in founding the WAP Forum. WAP Forum's primary goal is to bring together companies from all segments of the wireless industry value chain to ensure product interoperability and growth. As the market develops, a wide variety of interactive WAP-services will be available, such as banking, ticket booking, information and shopping.

The Ericsson R320 will be available in commercial volumes during Q1 2000. Two versions of the R320 will be produced. The R320s, and the R320sc which features a complete Chinese interface that is easy to learn and easy to use. This feature allows you to send and receive Chinese SMS messages and also lets you store Chinese names in the Phone Book.

Ericsson unveils the smallest world phone - in the world

M comments: This one is for you guys in the US...better than the i888
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Date: Wednesday, September 22 1999

Today at the PCS Trade Show in New Orleans, USA, Ericsson unveiled the second in a series of its World Phones to be available after the New Year. The T28 WORLD is designed to operate on the GSM 900 and GSM 1900 bands and offers you the opportunity to use the phone in Europe, Asia/Pacific and the Americas. Measuring a mere 97x50x15mm (2.5x 1.3x .4 inches) and weighing just 83 grams (less than 3 ounces) the T28 WORLD features a full graphic display for easy readability and features an active flip with a clever release button on the side of the phone. The voice dialling feature lets you contact someone simply
by saying their name, calls can also be answered or rejected by using voice only. The T28 WORLD also features the popular vibrating alert, which makes sure you don't miss calls in noisy environments and don't disturb others with your ring signal in more discreet situations.

Automatic time zone update is an especially useful feature when travelling globally (network dependent). The T28 automatically updates the time when the user moves from one time zone to another and functions as a world clock, alarm, calculator and stopwatch. Additionally, the T28 WORLD comes with a Global Travel Charger that allows you to charge your phone wherever you are in the world.

"Ericsson's T28 series of phones are now truly global. We have launched the T28s for GSM 900/1800 networks, the ER 207 which is based on the T28 design and technology platform for the Japanese PDC network and now the T28 WORLD which covers five continents, over 120 countries," says Jan Ahrenbring, Vice President Marketing and Communications at Ericsson Mobile Communications.

The T28 WORLD contains remarkable new technology supporting the complete range of GSM phase 2 - and where applicable GSM phase 2+ functions. Based on a new 3-volt platform the phone's components are smaller and thereby effect less power consumption ensuring an overall improvement in performance. Advanced software has been developed and utilised to ensure the user interface is faster, more accurate and easier to navigate. Examples of some new features resulting from this software are the status list and profiles. The status list allows you to view available, or indeed, occupied, memory positions, stored
positions and stored message types. Profiles lets you establish different profiles on your T28 WORLD e.g. you can choose different ring signals, including the vibrating alert and different ring volumes for different incoming calls.

Ericsson T28 WORLD is an exquisite example of cutting-edge technology and sensuously sculpted design. Its lines and contours have been delicately arched to give it the clear, simple, form traditionally associated with Scandinavian design. Finished in Urban Grey and Metropolitan Blue these colours capture the stylish image of the phone.

Other T28 WORLD features include:
Phone Book with 99 names

The popular games Tetris and Solitaire
Conference calls

Call hold/Call wait
Alternate Line Service
Advice of charge charging

Fixed dialling numbers
Call barring

Calling Line Identification

Another aspect is that the T28 WORLD contains a power gauging function. This
information is presented in minutes for both talk time and standby time and
thereby ensures you remain aware of how much power is available to you. With
the battery provided, minimum talk time is 1 hour and 33 minutes, maximum talk
time 3 hours and 35 minutes. Minimum standby time is 32 hours, maximum 50
hours. With additional batteries, maximum talk time is 10 hours and 27 minutes
and maximum standby time is 150 hours.

Ericsson has developed an all-new series of accessories to compliment the T28
WORLD. These accessories can best be described as "intelligent accessories"
in that they provide more than the usually functions. The Desktop Charger, for
instance, offers you detailed information about the amount of charging time
left before your battery is fully charged.

Ericsson unveils brand new communications tool - the Chatboard™

----------------------------------------------------------------------
M comments: This looks very cool and should only cost about $20 to $25 (I hope)

Date: Wednesday, September 22 1999

A completely new communications tool is born. At a spectacular event in Hong Kong today, Ericsson together with MTV VJ Sonia Couling, unveiled the Chatboard™ and an Internet community website to go with it. The Chatboard™ is a snap-on keyboard, which together with a mobile phone makes rapid messaging over SMS and e-mail possible, as well as editing a personal site on the Internet. This innovative tool is the first product of its kind on the market.

For those who are tired of extensive typing when sending messages from a mobile phone, salvation is here. On a small, metallic-coloured board, a 49 key keyboard and special function keys for SMS, e-mail, WWW, attachments and phonebook will help extending a phone's possibilities to communicate with text and pictures. The Chatboard™ is small in both size and prize. And it is remarkably easy to use. Just open the translucent blue plastic carrying case, attach the Chatboard™ to the phone, press the SMS or e-mail button and start
typing. And if one wants to add an attachment to the e-mail, sound, picture or a document, just press the attachment-button and choose from what you have put on your personal homepage in the Chatboard™ Community Internet website. When purchasing the Chatboard™, access to the Chatboard™ website and a personal e-mail address is included.

"We have listened to the young mobile people and the trends they are
following," says Jan Ahrenbring, Vice President Marketing and Communications at Ericsson Mobile Communications. "Generation Y have already adopted SMS messaging as an essential way to communicate and are the fastest growing users of text messages. These people have grown up with Internet and chatting. Now we are breaching Internet chat with mobile telephony chat," says Jan Ahrenbring.

The Chatboard™ will be available starting the first week of October, in selected markets, for less than the price of two music CDs. The Chatboard™ community site will go on air on September 30th , on ericsson.com.

Accessories for mobile phones have until now been chargers and the occasional portable handsfree. With the Chatboard™, Ericsson sets a new trend, where the accessory itself is a groovy gadget, which transforms the mobile phone into a messaging device which can send SMS and e-mails, even with attachments. The Chatboard™ is Compatible with the following existing Ericsson mobile phones: GF 788e, S 868, SH 888, I 888 WORLD, A1018s/sc, R250s, T10s/sc, and T18s/sc.
