Cha2,

If video streaming on a computer based device is to be a major source of entertainment in the future, what "lock" if any does Gemstar have in that - recognizing that this is potential only - but IMO coming up rapidly on the outside as in a horserace.

Starsight (a Gemstar division) has what I consider to be significant IP with its 'seamless' interface. This allows for the navigation and tuning to content regardless of its source, internet, broadcast, cable, satellite, etc. As the streaming video technology matures I would expect to see these channels listed next to the likes of CNN, NBC and hundreds of others. In addition, Gemstar was recently awarded this European patent: Message 11066918

What innovations and patents does Gemstar have beyond and outside the Program Guide service itself?

The wireless technology has been talked about previously. No wires, phone or STB needed for e-commerce. One press of the remote for purchase and another for confirmation. I also like the couponing IP. Time sensitive discounts are applied to a Smartcard to be used at the viewers/consumers convenience.

Gemstar's V-Chip Plus+ technology is starting to be incorporated into TV sets. On 9/2/99 they were awarded a global patent for this technology.

Stew mentioned ( I think, tho may remember incorrectly) that Gemstar can qualify as a telecom equip supplier. But I am not quite sure how exactly.

I don't recall making that statement. Gemstar is fabless with all implementation costs passed on to its licensees.

Regards,
Stew
