You don't need to be an AOL customer to use the AIM. You just to sign up with AOL. It is no big deal, and it is free. I never had AOL account but do use AIM regularly. If it does not work, try port 23 or something.

Recently, my main ISP, Prodigy, seems to have problems. I have been using NetZero. Boy, NetZero is painfully slow. These free things are junk. AOL is too expensive. I was very satisfied with my old ISP, CWIX. After Prodigy bought them out, it is going down hill. I think it is time to get another one.
