Now that would not be a genetically sound decision because after that event I can guarantee you that there would be no biological way of me ever "passing on" my compassionate genes to my offspring


This is where Dawkins and his relatively new theory of 'selfish gene' has a lot to say. The genes within , compassionate or evil, exist in a pool of yourself and all those related, maybe very remotely related if the gene is old. Many actions which result in the destruction of an individual can serve to keep the genes in the reproductive pool. There are some very good studies on honeybees and their willingness to sacrifice their lives for their sisters.
